What Are the Different Surgeries Available for Vision Correction?
If you wear glasses or contact lenses and are considering a procedure to reduce your dependence on them, you may come across names such as LASIK, SMILE, PRK, Contoura, ICL or IPCL. It can easily become confusing because these procedures do not all work in the same way, and the newest or most advertised option is not automatically the right one for every person.
The appropriate vision-correction surgery depends on your eye power, corneal shape and thickness, dry-eye status, age, lifestyle and overall eye health.
Here is a simple explanation of the main options.
1. LASIK
LASIK is one of the most well-known forms of laser vision correction.
During LASIK, the surgeon creates a very thin flap on the surface of the cornea. A laser then reshapes the cornea underneath so that light can focus more accurately inside the eye. The flap is then placed back into position.
LASIK may be used to correct conditions such as:
myopia or short-sightedness
hyperopia or long-sightedness in selected patients
astigmatism
One advantage of LASIK is that visual recovery is usually relatively quick. However, it is not suitable for every patient.
Your corneal thickness, corneal shape, eye power and dry-eye status need to be checked before LASIK is considered.
2. SMILE
SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.
Unlike LASIK, SMILE does not require the creation of a large corneal flap.
Instead, a laser creates a very small piece of tissue called a lenticule inside the cornea. The surgeon removes this tissue through a small opening, which changes the shape of the cornea and corrects the eye power.
SMILE is commonly considered for certain levels of myopia and astigmatism.
Because the procedure uses a smaller opening and does not create a LASIK-style flap, it may be an option for some patients depending on their corneal measurements and lifestyle.
However, SMILE is not automatically better than LASIK. Both procedures have different indications, and the decision should be based on the individual eye.
3. PRK
PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is another type of laser vision correction.
In PRK, there is no corneal flap.
The thin surface layer of the cornea is removed, and the laser reshapes the cornea underneath. The surface layer then naturally grows back during the healing process.
Because the surface of the cornea needs time to heal, recovery after PRK is usually slower than after LASIK.
Patients may experience some discomfort, watering or sensitivity during the initial healing period.
PRK can sometimes be considered when LASIK is not the preferred option, including in selected patients based on corneal thickness, lifestyle or other eye measurements.
4. TransPRK
TransPRK is a variation of PRK in which the laser performs more of the surface treatment without the surgeon manually removing the outer corneal layer.
It is sometimes described as a “no-touch” surface laser procedure.
Like traditional PRK, the surface of the eye still needs time to heal after treatment, so the recovery period is generally longer than LASIK.
Whether PRK or TransPRK is appropriate depends on the patient's corneal measurements and the technology available.
What Is Contoura Vision?
Patients may also hear the term Contoura Vision while researching laser eye surgery.
Contoura is not an entirely separate category of surgery like LASIK, SMILE or PRK. It is a topography-guided form of laser treatment that uses detailed measurements of the corneal surface to customise the correction.
Depending on the patient's eye and the platform being used, customised or topography-guided treatment may be combined with a suitable laser procedure.
Again, whether this offers an advantage for a particular patient needs to be decided after proper testing.
What If Laser Surgery Is Not Suitable for You?
Not everyone who wants freedom from glasses is suitable for laser vision correction.
For example, some patients may have:
very high spectacle power
unsuitable corneal thickness
an abnormal corneal shape
other conditions that make corneal laser treatment inappropriate
In selected patients, an implantable lens may be considered instead.
These are known as phakic intraocular lenses, including options such as ICL or IPCL.
Unlike LASIK, SMILE or PRK, these procedures do not reshape the cornea. A special lens is placed inside the eye while the natural lens remains in place.
This is a separate treatment category and requires its own detailed evaluation.

LASIK, SMILE or PRK – Which One Is Better?
There is no universal winner.
A patient may see three procedures advertised and naturally ask, “Which one is the best?”
A better question is:
“Which one is suitable for my eyes?”
Your ophthalmologist may look at:
your spectacle power
whether the power has been stable
corneal thickness
corneal shape
dry-eye condition
pupil size
occupation and lifestyle
night-driving requirements
contact-sport activities
overall eye health
For example, two people with the same spectacle power can still be advised different procedures because their corneas or lifestyles are different.
Vision Correction at Pixel Eye Hospital
If you are considering LASIK, SMILE, PRK or other vision-correction surgery in Hyderabad, detailed testing should come before deciding on a procedure.
At Pixel Eye Hospital in Kukatpally and Sanath Nagar, patients can consult Dr. Abdul Rasheed and Dr. Krishna Poojita to understand which refractive surgery options may be suitable after evaluating the cornea, eye power, tear film and overall eye health.
The aim should not simply be to choose the latest procedure, but to select an option that is appropriate for your individual eyes and visual requirements.
Final Thoughts
Today, there are several options for reducing dependence on glasses, including LASIK, SMILE, PRK and implantable lens procedures.
The important step is not choosing a procedure based on advertisements or what worked for someone else. A detailed eye examination can help determine what is suitable for your cornea, eye power and lifestyle.
If you are exploring laser vision correction in Hyderabad, you can visit Pixel Eye Hospital, Kukatpally or Sanath Nagar, for an evaluation and discussion of the options available for your eyes.
