What Are the Different Types of Cataract Surgery?
If you have been advised cataract surgery, you may come across words like phaco, SICS, laser cataract surgery or stitchless cataract surgery.
For someone hearing these terms for the first time, it can be difficult to understand what they actually mean. More importantly, patients often wonder: Which type of cataract surgery is right for me?
The answer is different for every patient.
A cataract develops when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. During cataract surgery, this cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens, or IOL.
The goal is the same in every cataract surgery. What changes is the technique used to remove the cloudy lens.
1. Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification, commonly called phaco, is one of the most commonly used cataract surgery techniques today.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes a very small opening in the eye. A special instrument uses ultrasound energy to break the cloudy lens into small pieces. These pieces are gently removed, and an artificial lens is placed inside the eye.
Because the opening is small, stitches are often not required. Apollo Hospitals
Phaco can be suitable for many routine cataract cases. However, whether it is appropriate for you depends on the type of cataract and the overall health of your eye.
2. Small-Incision Cataract Surgery
Small-Incision Cataract Surgery, also called SICS or MSICS, is another established method of cataract surgery.
In this procedure, the cataract is removed manually through a self-sealing opening instead of being completely broken into tiny pieces using ultrasound.
SICS can be useful in selected cases, including some patients with very dense or advanced cataracts.
Patients sometimes assume that a surgery involving more technology is automatically better. That is not always the case.
The right surgical technique depends on the condition of the eye rather than simply whether a machine or laser is being used.
3. Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
You may also hear about laser cataract surgery, or femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.
Here, a laser helps the surgeon perform certain steps of the operation, such as creating an opening in the lens capsule or softening the cataract before it is removed.
An important point to understand is that the laser does not perform the entire cataract surgery on its own. The surgeon still removes the cataract and places the artificial lens inside the eye.
Laser-assisted cataract surgery may be considered in selected patients, but it is not automatically the right choice for everyone.
What Does “Stitchless Cataract Surgery” Mean?
Another term patients frequently come across is stitchless cataract surgery.
Many modern cataract procedures are performed through small openings designed to close naturally. Because of this, stitches may often not be necessary.
However, whether a stitch is required depends on the individual surgery and the surgeon's assessment.
So rather than choosing a cataract procedure because it is advertised as “stitchless,” it is more useful to understand why a particular technique is being recommended for your eye.
Which Cataract Surgery Is Right for You?
There is no single cataract surgery that is best for every patient.
Before recommending a technique, your ophthalmologist may look at factors such as:
how advanced or hard the cataract is
the condition of your cornea
the health of your retina and optic nerve
whether you have diabetes or glaucoma
previous eye surgery or injury
your eye measurements
the artificial lens being planned
This is why two people of the same age with cataracts may be advised different types of surgery.
At Pixel Eye Hospital in Kukatpally and Sanath Nagar, Hyderabad, patients can have their eyes evaluated before the available cataract surgery and lens options are discussed. Dr. Abdul Rasheed and Dr. Krishna Poojita are part of the ophthalmology team at Pixel Eye Hospital, with cataract and refractive surgery among their areas of practice.
The aim of the consultation is not simply to select the newest technology, but to understand which approach may be appropriate for your individual eye.
Understanding Your Options Before Surgery
Hearing terms such as phaco, SICS and laser cataract surgery can make cataract treatment sound more complicated than it needs to be.
The important thing to remember is that these are simply different ways of removing the cloudy natural lens.
A detailed eye examination helps your ophthalmologist decide which approach may be appropriate for you.
If you are considering cataract surgery in Hyderabad, you can consult the ophthalmology team at Pixel Eye Hospital, Kukatpally or Sanath Nagar, to understand your cataract, surgical options and lens choices before making a decision.
